The Old Rocky's

While I was sitting in our all popular dining hall on campus today I starting thinking about something. Started of thinking about something that once was. Started thinking about something I dearly miss with all my heart. That thing was the "Old Rocky's".

I now put finger quotes around the name because I have gotten to that part in my college career where the "Old Rocky's" is obsolete to the new students under me. As I most likely speak for a large majority of the current upperclassmen, we still dream of quesadillas, taco salads, and pepperoni rolls dancing in our tummies. I could also never forget the all famous Cyber Fresh and their buffalo chicken wraps.

Yes the current Rocky's has a fantastic selection of foods, but there is nothing that will top the old original. I still remember all the celebrity pictures on the walls and that little game room in the back room that had a massive TV. I can't say I spent much time back in there during my freshman year. Something I also remember, was that little level of tables right in the middle. A sense of superiority always overcame me while sitting up there with my friends.

Despite my hearts longing for a massive taco salad, I am blessed for the new Rocky's we have now...I still wish they would go back to giving us three pieces of chicken in our wraps...and my girls Linda and Peggy can come back.

D'Rae Wise: Every Moment Matters

Most people just come to college and go about the day by day motions and just gain their education and then leave. Not many focus on their education but also become involved in their university. D’Rae Wise is one of those exceptions.

Wise cries out at the basketball team during a game.
Wise spends his college days focusing on his major in Leadership in Physical Activity while immersing himself into anything he can find on campus. For students who attend Slippery Rock, most know exactly who Wise is. He is the guy who screams at athletic events and he is the guy who sends us facebook notifications, but is there anything wrong with that? According to the general public, there is.

A large majority of the students at SRU cast a distasteful glare at Wise, but for what reason? Because he doesn’t conform to the “typical” college student, because he engages himself in an athletic game, or because he wants to alert other students of other events on campus? What is so wrong with that? He wants you to be involved with him or wants you to show your school spirit. But before you try and tear him down, do you know what he has been through?

Wise was born on June 10th, 1993 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Unfortunately, Wise spent much life growing up without his father, and for some people that can emotionally break them down. Wise took this as a drive and pushed himself to be something better than what he was. The direction in which he is traveling now is a clear testament to that fact. Also while growing up, Wise battled mild depression and lack of motivation. Something that brought him out his slump was him finding his “why”. Wise responded that his “why” was “to be healthy, live a long life and promote health and fitness.” This led Wise into one of his passions, bodybuilding.

Wise and his bodybuilding role model,
Greg Plitt, at the Arnold Classic.
“Bodybuilding was something I never really looked into till my junior year of high school,” Wise said. “It started from there, I watched YouTube videos on how to work out and soon after found my role model Greg Plitt.” Bodybuilding gave Wise an outlet and something to strive towards. Recently, he placed 2nd in the closed division and 3rd in the open physique division at the annual Mr. Ms. SRU Bodybuilding show.

Next to bodybuilding Wise enjoys spending his time working in the Aebersold Recreation Center (ARC). The job gives Wise the opportunity to have hands on involvement with students on campus. The ARC also allows him to further his future planning in life. It exposes him to many different types of people, and in turn helping him to gain more experience.

D'Rae Wise and other SRU students cheer intently at a football game.

When asked about his on campus role model, Wise replied without hesitation, Coach Kevin Reynolds. Reynolds in the head men’s basketball coach here at SRU. He emulates Reynolds because he is a “hard worker and pushes Wise to be a better person.

Reynolds expressed his love for Wise, “his enthusiasm, his energy and he effort is infectious.” He has gotten to know Wise on a different level than most have been able to. Wise has landed himself a large role on the team and become a big part of their success. When Reynolds learned of Wise’s placement in Mr. SRU it became a running joke that, “if he hadn’t eatin’ those baconators from Wendy’s he would have taken first,” Reynolds joked.

Wise stands among a sea of yellow shirts
at the Men's Basketball game against the University of Michigan.

Through Wise’s involvement, he has been able to pave a direction in which he would like to continue throughout the remainder of his life. He takes great pride in the education he has received at SRU and how it has prepared him for the world ahead of him.

Wise has been able to establish a good niche for himself here at SRU, through many student organizations and athletics on campus. He is not one that can be simply understood by simply looking him. You have to sit down and give him some of your time and ask who he is. You would be surprised the story you can learn.

The First Goodbye, But My Last Thank You

It is that time of year again when we start to wish our senior friends a goodbye and good luck on the next steps in their lives.

But this is not one of those letters. This is a thank you letter to you. A thank you for all I have been able to learn from you, a thank you for the great times we have spent together, and a thank you for most importantly being my friend. That, I cannot thank you enough for.

The friendships I have established with some of you that are leaving are so meaningful to me and cherish that. As I recently sat through senior presentations and listened to some of you speak I thought to myself that, my time too is rapidly approaching.

I have not been able to grasp the fact that I too will have to leave this place. It has become my home, our home. It will not be the same without the lot of you.

Despite my sappy words of utter disbelief that you are leaving, I am proud of all of you. You came to school with a basic idea of who you are and what you are going to do and are now leaving with a perfectly constructed vision for your life and future.

You have done your time here at college, you have woken up with the worst hang over headache and pledged to yourself that you will “never drink again”, you have all procrastinated that research paper and busted it out the night before it was due. Remember those days as some of the best days of your life, but also remember that it was just a small sliver of the remainder of the time you have left to live.

Take your accomplishments and failures with you and apply them to the life you are stepping into now. These will now be the best days of your life.

Forget the petty college drama, leave that behind. You have gone through too much to let that bother you now. Those people who called you names or hated you for what you have done mean nothing anymore. You have your future ahead of you and they do not have to be in it.

A new chapter of you life starts now, and there are a lot of blank pages. So grab a pen and start writing, because you have one hell of a story to write!

- Your friend always,

The in Depth Story

For my biography project I plan on doing it on D'Rae Wise. I recently did a short documentary on his life and would be intrigued to learn more about his life.

There is a lot to learn from someone like that and I feel that more people should know what makes him tick.

Apple: More than just a delicious fruit

With the ever evolving world of technology, one company has made itself known to stand apart from the crowd. That company would be Apple Inc. Their advances in software and mobile media markets really make them stand out from other companies such as Microsoft. Take a dive into some of Apple's biggest moments and see how the product has changed the way people think and function in everyday life.

Apple of My Eye

I plan to do my Meograph on the history of Apple Inc.

The amount of growth the company has made is amazing and intriguing.

I wish to follow the history and advancement of their products and of course leading up to the passing of Steve Jobs.

People are Spa-'getting' Their Eat on for Relay

A couple scoops of penne pasta, a ladle full of spaghetti sauce and a heaping mound of Parmesan cheese, junior Athletic Training major, Aaron Yoder dives into the annual Slippery Rock Athletic Training Association Spaghetti Dinner at 5pm on Wednesday.
Aaron Yoder dives into
his pasta

“Mmmmmm I love pasta,” Yoder exclaims.

Yoder has been involved in the Athletic Training Program for the three years he has attended Slippery Rock University. He enjoys the experience that he has gained through his classes and hands on training with numerous athletics. Yoder expressed that his time that he spent with the football team was his favorite and most rewarding.

The Athletic Training Department (ATP) at Slippery Rock University educates students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide care to athletes and the physically active within the five domains of athletic training practice. If you desire more knowledge and information on the ATP click here

The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education also recognizes the Slippery Rock Athletic Training Association.

Every year the ATP puts on their spaghetti dinner in hopes to raise money for their Relay for Life team.

“This year with us selling around 200 presale tickets,” Yoder said. “We raised about $1200 for our organization.”

Relay for Life is an event that is held annually in the Morrow Field House on SRU’s campus. At Relay for Life, participants partake in survivor walks and interact with different organizations that are hosting games and activities for everyone to enjoy. The money that is raised at Relay for Life is donated to cancer research around the world.

If you would like to sign up to participate in SRU’s Relay for Life or if you want to donate to the cause click here.

Many students and local Slippery Rock townspeople migrated to the local Township Building in search of a delicious dinner and boy did the ATP deliver.

Yoder explained that a large majority of the food was donated from outside venues.

“The pasta was donated from Monte Cello’s in Ross Twp., the sauce was from Monte Cello’s and Dominos and the bread was from Panera Bread,” Yoder said.

Many organizations take different approaches to raising money for Relay for Life and the ATP definitely gave it their all and gained a good amount of money for a good cause.

Freshman students, Angela Loeliger, Rachel Zook, and Zoe Weaver enjoy
each others company at the spaghetti dinner.

Below are some short clips of the event:

Confessions of A Tour Guide

"Alright so we are going to head into the building that is directly behind me. This is Watson Hall and it is our main hub for all the Residential Suites here at Slippery Rock. The reason it is so is because located inside Watson Hall is the Office of Residence Life and the ID Card Office."
My tour group and I

That is just one of my few tag lines that I say while I give tours to prospective students and parents at my job as a Pride Guide. I don't think that I ever would have expected that I would be giving tours of the university to parents and their children. Who am I kidding? I am a shy, reserved kid that doesn't do well with strangers and basic conversation...boy was I wrong.

My career as a Pride Guide started the summer before my Junior year of college and have loved it ever since. Considering the fact that, I never in a million years saw myself standing (I mean walking backwards in front of people) speaking about why I love this campus so much and explaining all the fun facts about it, I was very nervous about this job.

I was givin' one accelerated training day and the next day I was on my own. I'll be the first one to tell you that my first tour was AWFUL! I have never been more embarrassed and felt so unprepared for something in my life. *On a side note, if you were in my group on my first day, please please please come back. I'm a lot better at my job now* Despite the struggle of my first day, I stuck with this job and continue to excel in it.

So this really isn't meant to be a story about sticking with something and not quitting just because it's difficult, no, this is to really just express what this job has done for me and what I feel it can do for others.

As a tour guide we learn all these facts about he campus not just for our own enjoyment or just because we always bleed Green and White and are supposed to be those staple students for the university. We learn all these things so that we can help to express our love for this campus and that hopefully the prospective students can feel that and gain that same level of love that we have for the university. When I was looking at colleges, Slippery Rock was the last school I visited. It wasn't my last school because I was "fed" up with looking at schools or just tried of the whole college search thing as a whole, this was my last school because when I was done with my tour I knew that this is where I wanted to go. I still wish I could remember the name of the guy who gave me my tour that day and thank him for helping me make one of the best decisions of my life and that because of him I'm following the path that I am on here at Slippery Rock University.

That is why I love this job.  I hope that with every tour I give I can make someone fall in love with the campus just like I did, many years ago.

A "Black & Yellow" St. Patrick's Day

Downtown Pittsburgh
As I am starting to grow up I have the urge to travel to new places and try new things and one thing I have heard such high praise of was the St. Patrick's Day parade that is held in
Downtown Pittsburgh.

It is said that the parade is one of the largest in the country. Despite the ripping winds and chilly temperatures, an estimated 200,000 people came to watch the parade and participate in the festivities. Unfortunately, because of my age there are a large majority of "festivities" that come along with St. Patrick's Day that I cannot participate in. Regardless of not participating in those events I was able to have a great time downtown with my friends.

Check out the slideshow below for some of the pictures I took while I was down there or check them out on my photography page.

Extra! Extra! History of The Rocket Newspaper!

The Rocket Newspaper, formerly known as "The Slippery Rocket", has been a driving force for how students at Slippery Rock University get their news about the campus and the surrounding area. The current Rocket has come a long way from where it began. From a dollar a year for a paper to the award winning website we have now, The Rocket has continued to grow and will continue to do so. Take a step back in time with me and learn about some of the big things that The Rocket has done in its history while on its way to Volume 100!

Great Scott! It's a hover board!

The day that all "Back the Future" fans have been dreaming of might have potentially arrived. It might have even come earlier than recently expected.

Back in 1989 a young man named Marty McFly, played by the famous actor Michael J. Fox and his scientist companion Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd traveled to into the future in the all famous DeLorean DMC-12 which Doc converted into a time machine to hopefully prevent Marty's future children from being imprisoned. One of the key scenes in this movie that really turned some heads, or "rubber neck" if you will, was when Marty jumped on his trusty Mattel made Hover Board and fled from his assailants.

Back story and movie clips aside, a company called HUVr Tech released on Monday a video of their product in action. A REAL LIFE HOVER BOARD!

Fact or fiction you may ask? Well, it's hard to tell if this is really a real product and if you are going to be able to hover across the pavement. Now for a science junkie like myself, I pray to sweet 8 lbs 6 oz baby Jesus that it is real. (For whomever got that reference...You are awesome) Here is the companies video releasing their idea to the public. If you notice they have some celebrity cameos that come in to test the board, such as Tony Hawk and Doc himself! Take a look and make your own opinion!

So what do you think? Is this really going to be a product? If so, how much is it going to cost? These are all wonderful questions and I would love to know your thoughts. Let me know!

If this ends up to be real, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will be trying to spend my money on the blue and gray one!

Unfortunately the HUVr board was proved a hoax. Tony Hawk came out with this video explaining that the whole thing was a prank. Feel free to watch as I reach for my box of tissues.

"Rock" Solid Fashion

The “Dress for Success Fashion Show” presented by AVI, Career Education and Development Office, CSIL, Enterprise, Grove City Premium Outlets and Prudential on Wednesday evening showed students the appropriate types of attire that is acceptable for men and women in the workplace. Students strutted their stuff down the cat walk and with a barrage of camera clicks and flashes made it seem like a real professional fashion show. There were many different types of dress that were shown off to spectators. Such outfits included proper interview attire, casual Friday wear and even proper gym wear. The Director of Career Education & Development, John Rindy stated that the event "is a chance for the students to see what professional dress looks like in many different circumstances." He hopes that with this event students can leave with the knowledge about how to choose the appropriate wear for the particular situation.

Words

Words. Easy to write but sometimes impossible to say. So writing will be my way to speak them.

I have so much to say but can never seem to find the words to say what I need. What makes it harder is I can see the words. All of them. I cannot explain how I feel because I do not know and I hate how I can't figure that out.

I am everywhere, moving at a million miles per hour and slowing down would be a great benefit to me. But I do not know how to put on the brakes, they are broken. I keep moving so I don't have to focus on what is blurring by my face and in hopes that I can ignore what is really going on around me. The downfall of this is the fact that I am letting a lot of nice things fly by and not stopping to appreciate them. I may not stop and take my time to fully soak in everything but I do see everything.

I see the way things work and the way things change. Something I have learned that has really forced

me to think differently is the story that the look in someone's eyes can tell you. You can see when someone is upset, when someone is happy, and when someone is feeling. My eyes could tell you more than you could ever want to know. But only if it was that easy, unfortunately it's not. I see the hurt, I see the disappointment and it kills me. Not the type of eyes I like to see. I want dilated pupils glistening in the light not the look that stares back at me or the eyes that dart away from mine.

I wish I knew how to fix that. I wish that was something I knew how to change. But that isn't something we are taught in school. It is something we learn in this thing called life and life will never be easy.

But the moral of this story is I have the words to say. I just don't know how to say them, but look into my eyes and you will know.

Male. Female. Or Two-Spirit?

Just recently Facebook has released 56 new gender options for users to pick from. It is no longer just the typical male or female that it used to be. Some of the new options include; Agender, Female to Male,

Intersex, Two-spirit and even Neither.(Click here to see the remainder of the list) They also have made users be able to change the pronoun in which they are referred to publicly. You are now able to choose “he/his, she/her, or the gender-neutral they/their” as your options to better suit your preference.

As it was reinstated in an article by CNN, Facebook’s main drive in doing this is so that people may better express their own identity to the world. We live in a world with many different types of people and facebook directly interacts with all of them as well. As this may be a touchy topic for some people, facebook even gives the option to hide, or keep private, their specific gender selection with certain people. Constant facebook users have been in debate with facebook about making these changes and they finally delivered.

I overall think this is a really good idea. Like I stated earlier, not one person is the same and people now a days are really open about letting people know that they are different and what better way to do that besides facebook? We all look at each other’s profiles when we get a new friend request and see what they are all about and who they are. For some people this may make that task a lot easier. As I see this as a really good idea, I still don’t understand why people are limited to the only 56 options? Why not leave a blank space and allow someone to just type in what they feel their gender is? Yes this may start a new batch of problems and a bunch of people just making thing up, but isnt facebook supposed to be a way to express ourselves? If they wanted to go ahead and just leave it open to peoples interpretations of themselves I feel that there would need to be minimal regulation on what people put in the box and have some tech guy checking those out and filter through what’s appropriate and what’s not. At the same time, if they are going to start to regulate gender specifications I think someone needs to take a look into all the people posting mirror pic selfies. But that’s a whole different can of worms.

A New Exposure: Should cigarette smoking be banned?

I think it is safe to say that we all know someone in our lives that smokes or have smoked in the past. I personally have had family members who have engaged in the activity and friends who do the same. I’m not here to tell them that they are wrong for doing so but to hopefully reassure them about the potential health hazards that come along with the activity and to answer the overall question of; should cigarette smoking be banned.

First I want to start this off by talking about some of the background that comes along with smoking and then get to the question at hand. As stated by the CDC, cigarettes kill 480,000 people every year and that number continues to rise as the activity becomes more popular. Also stated in a different article, which I thought was really moving about cigarettes was that;

"They kill more people than cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and all other illegal drugs combined."

That is truly unbelievable to grasp the amount of people that die every year. To gain hold of how many people that is, imagine losing the entire city of Sacramento, California. There are around 475,000 people living there. It is unimaginable to loose that many people every year.

Looking up facts on the hazards of smoking is a scary thing. We know its bad, we know that the chemicals that are placed inside of them are bad, but yet people continue to smoke. Some of the few most notable ones are:
Chemicals inside cigarettes
  •      Cyanhydric Acid (was used in gas chambers)
  •      Methanol (used as rocket fuel)
  •      Arsenic (lethal poison)
  •      Nicotine (used as a herbicide and insecticide)
  •      DDT (insecticide)
  •      Carbon Monoxide (found in exhaust fumes)
  •      Vinyl Chloride (used in plastic materials)

With all those chemicals being mixed together the lead to a very unhealthy mix of complications that can come along with it. Some of the major diseases are:
  •      Cardiovascular disease
  •      Cancer
  •      COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)

All of which can lead to and early and premature death.

Smoking has been made out to be the “cool” thing to do by a lot of Hollywood productions and work that comes out of there. As it has been made to be a popular thing to do there are lots of work to try and counteract those attempts. I will always remember this anti-smoking ad I saw on TV one day.

The constant debate of if smoking should be banned is something that will always be around. A cool site called debate.org asks normal people their opinions on topics and the one they have going on this current issue has a split of 50-50.

I feel personally you can’t and shouldn’t ban smoking. Yes, it is bad for you and ultimately can lead to you dying early but this is not something I feel can be contained. If we are to ban it based off the fact that it is unhealthy for us then there are a lot more things that need to be banned as well. As I do not condone the activity of smoking and would hope my loved ones wouldn’t do it as well I can only try and bring the negative aspects to light and hope they can see what this can do to you.

The First Frame

With this being my first post I felt like I should start it with a "Hello".

Well with introductions out of the way I feel like we can get this ball rolling. My name is Alex Mowrey, I am 20 years young and a student at Slippery Rock University. When I am not trudging through mountains of snow or cowering away from the pounding rain under my umbrella I spend the remainder of my time pursing my Communications degree and working my rear-end off at my five jobs. Yeah, I said five jobs. I am the Photo Editor of The Rocket Newspaper, I am a Pride Guide for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, I am a second year Community Assistant, CA (an RA to every other university) in Building D, I am teachers assistant for one of my previous Comm classes and lastly I do a lot of work for our social media department and help to market the university through it. (I feel like I need a title for that job...the rest have a title.)

Abide by contrary belief I do get time to myself aside from all my jobs. And when I say I have time to myself that means I spend it in other clubs and organizations. If you couldn't tell I am crazy involved on campus. I am a brother of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and hold the Historian position in my chapter. I also am a Co-Chair for the Student Engagement Committee for the 125th Anniversary of Slippery Rock University.

Okay, enough about me.

New Media Journalism. A class that I knew nothing about walking into it and left the first day being really excited to get started. Going through the syllabus and the course objectives for the semester I cannot wait to do some of the work we have planned. I hope that by the time I leave this class I can have a better understanding on reporting online and using other forms of media besides a physical newspaper. I have a lot talent in photography and video so I think that I will be able to apply my skills to this class and do some really good work. I also feel like this class is going to get me started becoming a regular blogger. Still haven't decided if that is a good thing or not. Probably will start to spend a lot of my time doing this now too.

I spend a lot of time online, whether it be updating my Facebook or Twitter accounts or brushing up on the latest new on NBC News or the Huffington Post. My phone is always attached to my body so I am always getting updates and searching the web on it. Needless to say, without my phone, I am truly lost.

Well I feel like I've spilled out enough basic info about myself and about my interests in this course to end this first edition. Feel free to follow me on my blogging journey and ask me questions as you see fit. I'm pretty much an open book and happy to answer questions. It now begins!

(I want to try to end all my posts with a quote that I like. I am going to start this tradition with my favorite one of all time)
#qotd "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Seuss
